Born and raised in Waxahachie, Joe brings deep expertise in taxes, accounting, and financial planning. He holds a Bachelor of Accounting from the University of North Texas and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). To further strengthen his technical foundation, Joe earned a Master of Taxation from the University of Texas at Arlington and completed the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner program through the College for Financial Planning in 2016.
Joe began his career in the tax practice at BDO Seidman, LLP in Dallas, where he developed a strong foundation in tax preparation and planning. He later joined the tax department at Alcon Laboratories, Inc. in Fort Worth, gaining broad experience in corporate tax before launching his own tax and wealth management firm, Averett Financial, LLC, in 2013. His passion for helping individuals and families make smart financial decisions ultimately led to the formation of Canopy Wealth Strategies with Tanner. Joe remains an active member of the Texas Society of CPAs and stays engaged with industry thought leadership—often inspired, in part, by his longtime enjoyment of the Dave Ramsey radio show.
Joe and his wife, Sara, live in Aledo with their two children and are active members of Christ Chapel Bible Church. Together, they have served in various volunteer roles, including Christ Chapel’s pre-marriage mentoring program, the Choose Life 5K, Crown Financial Ministries, Mayfest, and other community initiatives.
Outside of work and community involvement, Joe leads an energetic lifestyle. He is an accomplished marathon runner—including finishing the Boston Marathon—and enjoys competitive indoor and outdoor soccer. He also loves spending time outdoors hiking, skiing, and chasing his next “big catch” on the water.
